Adventure Boxes

Last year one of the Five in A Row mom's posted about making up summer adventure boxes for her kids. It sounded fun so I decided we would give it a go this year! What are adventure boxes? It is a box filled with a subject your child is interested in.
You can fill it with one theme or subject for the entire summer or maybe a couple of different subjects. You can fill the entire box all at once or add a few items once a week. There is no right or wrong way to go about it.

I asked each of the boys what they wanted to learn about over the summer. This was what they came up with: rockets and astronauts, dinosaurs, ocean and I chose insects. I wasn't going to add something of my choosing, but because I have some fun insect activities, I thought summer would be the perfect time for that theme. We are going to take a couple of weeks on each theme and let them have fun!

To start we needed a box. I had originally been going to make them each an adventure box, but since we have such a small home I didn't want the additional clutter of two boxes. The boxes I found were pretty big. I used bankers boxes that I found at Walmart 2 for less than $5. They weren't very attractive so I spruced them up with scrapbook paper, stickers and modge podge that I had on hand. Here is our finished box.

A close up of the lid. I didn't put "Our Summer Adventure Box" since I may want to use it year round.

I didn't have enough of one color scrapbook paper so I found some that coordinated and just cut it into strips and modge podged it on.

This is what I used for the sides.
It was the closest thing that seemed to go with the other two sides.

We decided to start with insects, ants to be specific!
I put a few books on ants in the box and two small ant farms that I found at Target earlier in the spring.

happy boys waiting to open their box!

What's inside?

Stay tuned for our adventures.......

I love this idea! Things are so much more interesting when they are packaged fun! Plus, kids will be more interested when things are grouped together like you did. I do summer school with my own kids and just have their stuff in different places all over. This would help to consolidate it all into one place. Thanks for the great idea!
