Unrivaled {Book Review}

Unrivaled by Siri Mitchell

About Unrivaled:

Lucy Kendall returns from a tour of the Continent, her luggage filled with the latest fashions and a mind fired by inspiration. After tasting Europe's best confections, she's sure she'll come up with a recipe that will save her father's struggling candy business and reverse their fortunes. But she soon discovers that their biggest competitor, the cheat who swindled her father out of his prize recipe, has now hired a promotions manager-a cocky, handsome out-of-towner who gets under Lucy's skin.

Charlie Clarke's new role at Standard Manufacturing is the chance of a lifetime. He can put some rough times behind him and reconnect with the father he's never known. The one thing he never counted on, however, was tenacious Lucy Kendall. She's making his work life miserable...and making herself impossible for him to forget.

My Thoughts

 When I first started to read Unrivaled I was not sure I really liked the author’s writing style. It was very different from what I normally enjoy. However, after the first chapter I really started to really enjoy this story!

Unrivaled is written from the perspective of both main characters, Lucy Kendall and Charlie Clarke.  Each chapter alternates back and forth between the two.

The story is set in St. Louis, Missouri in 1910. I really enjoyed the time period and the description of the city. I can just hear the paperboys hawking their daily papers on the street corners! Imagine the feel of the city and see picture the shop windows as you walked along the streets of the city!

The rivalry between these two candy companies was interesting.  Lucy and Charlie are the adult children of candy makers. How difficult it was for women during this time period to be taken seriously. Women were expected to marry well and let their husbands to the work. Lucy wants nothing more then to make candy and keep her father’s company in business.  Charlie on the other hand, has been estranged from his father for many years, is eager to please his father to gain his love and attention and will do just about anything to gain that love.

Both parties continually try to outwit the other and some serious undermining of each others companies goes on which seems to just create more problems, hurt some dear friends and each other.

I was so surprised with the twist at the end of the story! I didn’t see it coming although I had an idea that something was going to happen, just not in the way it did!

I found Unrivaled very entertaining and surprising!
