Christmas. Does the above post title have the word Christmas in it? Did we not just celebrate Christmas? It is still January, right?
Perhaps you thought I have lost my mind bringing up the subject of Christmas when we are only just a month into the new year?
You can rest assured that I have not gone off the deep end (at least not completely!) Yes January is still upon us and while our thoughts are on hearts and chocolates, for many of us Christmas still lingers in our minds and often our wallets when those after Christmas bills come due It is only then that we realize that we may have spent too much!

Thankfully for me I did not overspend on Christmas last year and had only one bill come in related to Christmas. But it was not always that way. In fact there were many years where I know I overspent and was not prepared as I could have been had I started a little sooner and planned a little better. In fact looking back on this past Christmas I know that I could have done better and been more wise in my spending.
Recently I had the opportunity to read Christmas with Strategic Shopping: the Twelve Days of Christmas by Candy Foote.
Candy and her husband have a family of 12 children! She has learned how to get the most value for her dollar by shopping for those rock-bottom prices not just in December, but throughout the year. She shares this information in her new book on being a successful strategic Christmas shopper not just a month before Christmas but all year long!
Some of her tips and ideas I already do such as shopping the clearance racks and seasonal sales. One of the tips she shares is to shop the back to school sales-which is something I do each year and I stock up on anything I need while the prices are at their lowest. I usually buy enough school supplies to last us until the next year and additionally pick up items for gifts throughout the year.
Reading through Candy’s book I did learn some things I did not know. Here are some of the great tips and ideas that I learned and plan on applying to my Christmas shopping plans for the year:
- March is the best time to buy winter items as it is the end of the winter season.
- May is the month when bigger ticket items are drastically reduced. Items such as coffee makers, toasters and computers
- Buying socks and underwear during the back to school sales (WHY have I not done this!)
- items such as buckets and shovels, water guns, bubbles are great buys in July. (someone tell me why I never thought to buy buckets and shovels for winter? This is a fantastic idea!)
- Creating a Holiday food box-This is one of my favorite tips! Buying at least one item each time you go shopping for your holiday meals and baking. Making those purchases less painful on your budget than purchasing those extra items all at once. Brilliant!
These are just a few tips and ideas that are in Strategic Shopping for Christmas! There are so many more that are easy to implement and require just a little time and effort!
Another part of the book that I really enjoyed is at the end of each chapter, Candy shares what her family does in their house to prepare for Christmas. I really like that even though they are a large family Candy encourages gift giving for everyone. Not simply drawing names but each and every family member (and their spouses and children) give gifts to each other. Their focus is on giving to others!
At the end of the book Candy has provided a 14 page notebook that you can print out to keep track of your Christmas buying throughout the year. You will find pages for stocking stuffers, Christmas dinner, gifts to make, sizes of family members, Christmas card list and many more to help you be more organized with your strategic Christmas planning!
If you are looking for some great ideas and tips for saving money on your Christmas shopping this book will get you on your way to being a fantastic strategic shopper!
One more thing I wanted to mention. You do not have to have large family to use these wonderful ideas! Whether you have twelve children or two children these ideas will work for your family!
Or you can purchase both of Candy’s books with this e-book bundle for even greater savings!
