Setting Realistic Goals

Here we are midway through January! Can you believe it?  I decided at the beginning of 2014 I was going to limit my goals. Instead of making a long list of goals that I have no chance of reaching, I would practice more purposeful living.  I think goals or resolutions as some people like to refer to them can often times backfire on us.

We create this long list of goals we wish to achieve not realizing that many times we are just setting ourselves up for failure.  When I make my goal list too long I am bound to fail.

So this year I decided that I would only make a short list of goals each month and work on them a little bit at at time.  I will add to them as I accomplish current ones.

What have I been working on for January? Just five items:

  • Bible reading
  • Blog
  • Clutter
  • Savings
  • Menu Planning

I know it is a short list but the goals are huge and accomplishing them would be a great success for me.

I had to ask myself what I wanted to accomplish with each goal.

Bible Reading-I am pretty faithful with reading my Bible each day. However I want to spend more time in the Word each day and work on a Bible study or devotional along with my daily reading. To dig deeper.

Blog-I have neglected my poor blog in terms of writing. I have been focused on the many reviews that I do and not focused enough on the actual writing. While I plan on continuing the reviews, I miss writing. I want to write more and share about our homeschool adventures. I have also been doing a bit of behind the scenes blog work to clean up my little space here in blogland.

Clutter-If you have been reading my blog for any length of the you know that I have worked on clearing out the clutter on and off for sometime. I still have a long way to go in this area. I have made progress though since Christmas. I have been able to keep my kitchen counters clean and clear of unnecessary items each day. I love seeing some empty space! I am a piler a job which I am very good at! (if you need lessons in piling, I’m your girl). Achieving this small goal has been an accomplishment for me and to be consistent even better!

Savings-Do you live paycheck to paycheck? Yeah me too. It’s the pits. Having one income, living frugally and paying off old debt will cause that to happen! We do save regularly. Small amounts and many times we end up needing to use it for something. I have made more conscious effort to save regularly. Whether a small amount that may seem insignificant or a larger amount we save something. I want to increase our savings. I have taken some baby steps toward this goal that I will be sharing in a future post.

Menu Planning-Now here is a goal I really need to work on. Menu planning goes hand in hand with saving.  If I menu plan (which I have done in the past). I save money by knowing ahead of time what we will be eating for any particular meal.

Also if I am planning out our meals I am either using food we have on hand or planning out my shopping list not just running to the store and grabbing something to cook for supper.

So there are my 5 goals I am currently working on. I have not decided if I will add to these goals in February. (I do have a running list in my mind) Or perhaps I will continue to work on these 5 goals until they are more concrete and become second nature to me.

I will be sharing my updates with you once a month throughout the year.

Do you have goals you are trying to achieve? If you do what steps have you taken to make those goals a reality? How are you progressing in reaching those goals. I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas in the comments!
